Cop Shows Up To Arrest Her For Shoplifting - When He Walks In The Door, His Heart Breaks
By Christina Williams

Sometimes, there comes a moment where you might be forced to do something you would never consider. A split second where the choice is to let your child go without, or instead pray no one sees you hide a needed item as you try to leave the store. And if that moment comes, all I can do is hope that there is a police officer nearby that is as kind as the one in the following story.

Last weekend, security at a local Giant grocery store detained a young mother for allegedly attempting to steal $15 worth of diapers. Officer Bennett Johns arrived at the scene and, after citing her for misdemeanor theft, learned that she couldn’t afford the diapers for her 2-year-old son. Rather than turning a blind eye, Johns stepped up and paid for the diapers himself.

The Laurel Police Department shared the heartwarming story on Facebook, highlighting Officer Johns’ act of kindness and empathy toward a struggling mother and her child. The post quickly garnered positive feedback, with hundreds of comments commending Officer Johns for his selfless gesture.

Police Chief Richard McLaughlin expressed his pride in Officer Johns, emphasizing the importance of doing the right thing even when no one is watching. “Though it’s but a snapshot of some of the work your officers are doing daily, we still wanted to take a moment to thank Officer Johns for not just fairly enforcing the law, but also showing empathy to an innocent child put in a difficult situation,” the department wrote in a social media post.

I think it speaks volumes that they are doing the right thing for the right reason when nobody is watching,” McLaughlin said.

Officer Johns’ decision not only spared the young child from going without but also demonstrated the department’s commitment to serving the community with compassion. While the woman was cited for shoplifting, she was also referred to social services to ensure that both she and her toddler receive the support they need.

In an interview with WTTG, Officer Johns explained his motivation, stating that he respected and sympathized with the mother’s efforts to provide for her child. Despite issuing a citation for shoplifting, Officer Johns’ act of kindness shines through, reflecting a genuine concern for the well-being of those he serves.

The city is now assisting the woman in accessing social and advocacy services, underscoring the importance of addressing the underlying needs of individuals facing difficult circumstances. For Officer Johns, this was about expressing empathy and kindness to someone who was trying to do the best she was able to in her situation.

“This mother was going out of her way and doing everything she can to provide for her kid and I can respect that,” he said. “I can sympathize with that as well so that is why I felt compelled to help the mother in purchasing the diapers for the kid.” Watch below for a look at this wonderful police officer!
